IVF in India is open to international patients. Surrogacy is not. A full cycle here costs roughly $2,262 to $3,935 including medication, against $15,000 to $25,000 in the United States. Expect 12 to 16 days in Delhi, or two shorter trips if you freeze all embryos. Travel on a Medical visa naming the clinic, never a tourist visa.

Passport control
Two Acts decide what you may do here: the ART (Regulation) Act 2021 and the Surrogacy (Regulation) Act 2021. Between them, India is straightforward for IVF and closed for surrogacy to anyone on a foreign passport. Better you learn that here than after buying a ticket.
Frozen transfer and fertility preservation
Egg, sperm and embryo freezing are available, with storage and consent durations set by the ART Act. Moving frozen material into or out of India needs advance clearance and is never something to assume.
Donor eggs and donor sperm
Permitted, but only through ART banks registered under the Act, with screening and a cap on how often a donor may donate. How India treats donor parentage is not necessarily how your own country will.
Surrogacy, on a foreign passport
Not available. The Surrogacy (Regulation) Act 2021 permits only altruistic surrogacy and restricts eligibility to Indian citizens meeting defined criteria. Commercial surrogacy is prohibited outright. Any clinic or agent offering you surrogacy in India on a foreign passport is offering something the law does not allow.
Paying a donor or a surrogate
Prohibited. Compensation beyond the medical expenses and insurance the Acts specify is an offence for everyone involved, the intending parents included.
Choosing the sex of your embryo
Prohibited under the PCPNDT Act 1994. PGT-A screens for chromosomal abnormality; sex is never disclosed.

Stimulation, retrieval and transfer
Arrive around day two of your cycle. Stimulation runs ten to twelve days with scans every second or third day, then retrieval under sedation as a day case, and a fresh transfer five days later if your lining suits it. Book a flexible return, because ovaries do not read calendars.

Retrieval on the first trip, embryos vitrified, and a frozen transfer on a shorter second trip whenever suits you. It adds a flight and a little cost, but it splits your time away into two manageable blocks and often improves the endometrium.

You can fly two days after transfer. There is no evidence that bed rest or staying in the country improves implantation. The beta-hCG blood test is done at a laboratory near you on day fourteen and sent to us the same day.

Apply under the Medical category, naming the clinic. We issue the invitation letter with the treatment plan and dates. Arriving on a tourist visa is the single most common reason a cycle has to be rescheduled.

If a clinic or agent offers you surrogacy in India on a foreign passport, they are offering something the law does not permit, and you should treat everything else they tell you with the same scepticism.
Cost How much does IVF cost in India compared with the UK or the US?
A complete cycle here runs roughly 2,300 to 3,900 US dollars including medication, against about 6,300 to 10,000 in the United Kingdom, 6,800 to 11,000 in the UAE, and 15,000 to 25,000 in the United States. The gap is real, but compare like with like: ask each clinic whether stimulation medication sits inside the quoted figure, because it is the largest single line and it is frequently excluded.
Travel and visa How long do I need to stay in India for an IVF cycle?
Twelve to sixteen days for a full cycle with a fresh transfer, arriving near day two of your period. Split into a freeze-all cycle and a later frozen transfer, that becomes about ten days on the first trip and six on the second. Book a flexible return, because the exact day of retrieval depends on how your ovaries respond.

What the law allows Can I bring frozen embryos or sperm into India, or take them out?
Sometimes, but never assume it. Cross-border movement of gametes and embryos requires advance regulatory clearance on both sides, appropriate shipping, and agreement between the two clinics. Raise it at the first consultation, not once flights are booked.
